This is a 185-mile trail (will be 238 miles when
completed from Machens to Clinton) that parallels
the Missouri River from
St. Charles to Boonville, then leaves the river
turning south to Sedalia. The surface is crushed
limestone consisting of "fines" and material less than
1/4 inch in size -- meaning that it is a hard-packed
wonderful riding surface, and is
as nearly flat as any trail we have ever ridden.
It is an absolutely wonderful trail!!
Often referred to as
the "Lewis and Clark Trail," you will pass many
historic markers, including the Lewis and Clark
cave that was detailed in their journals.
Ride this trail one day and you will be hooked on
rail trails for life!
The photo at the bottom right shows the 1893 MKT tunnel
at Rocheport. Katy is a nickname for the
Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad, which built this
line in the mid-1890s.
The photos at the bottom left show how pretty the trail
is when it runs right on the river, which it does
in many places. And please check out
www.bikekatytrail.com for a lot more information.
